A senior aide to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, on Wednesday dismissed reports that New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and his wife, Samira were evacuated from Qatar amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, describing the claims as “complete misinformation.”
He clarified that Dr. Bawumia’s travel arrangements were routine diplomatic courtesies and not an emergency response, contrary to widespread speculation in sections of the media.
Earlier reports had suggested that the former Vice President was evacuated from Qatar to Saudi Arabia due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Mr. Aboagye firmly rejected the narrative, insisting there was no evacuation.
“First of all, he has not been evacuated. We should put that on record. Evacuation suggests he was under some kind of distress, at risk, or under some kind of threat. That is complete misinformation,” he told an Accra-based radio station.
He explained that Dr. Bawumia had travelled to perform Umrah in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, transiting through Doha, Qatar. While Qatar temporarily closed its airspace due to the hostilities, Saudi Arabia’s airspace remained open.
The aide to the former Vice President further disclosed that Ghana’s embassy in Qatar facilitated Dr. Bawumia’s onward journey to Saudi Arabia, stressing that the assistance provided was consistent with standard diplomatic support extended to senior state officials.
According to him, the former Vice President travelled by road from Qatar to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday morning and is currently in the Kingdom to perform his Umrah. Enditem
