Togo confirms 1st mpox case: health ministry

Togo has confirmed a case of mpox, the first one in the country, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene announced in a statement on Friday.

   According to the statement, the case was detected and confirmed on Friday, and the patient is a 22-year-old woman residing in the capital city of Lome. She is currently receiving treatment at an infectious disease unit.

   In response to this situation, the ministry said it has taken steps to reinforce epidemiological surveillance, early warning, case confirmation, management of detected cases, and public awareness campaigns on preventive measures.

   Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, was first identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958. It is an infectious disease primarily spread through body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials.  Enditem
