The Trades Union Congress (TUC) will hold a press conference on Monday on the utility tariff increment by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC), according to General Secretary Joshua Ansah on Wednesday.
He told the media that the increment by the Commission is insensitive to the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian worker.
Ansah expressed the disappointment of labour over the action by the regulator and the government for the upward adjustment.
“The TUC is not happy with the tariff increment coming on the back of the 9 per cent adjustment to public sector pay. You give us 9 per cent and increase electricity by 9.86 per cent and water by 15.92 per cent; the ordinary worker will end up worse. We will hold a press conference on Monday and state our position clearly,” said the General Secretary.
Electricity and water tariffs will go up from January 1, 2026, by 9.86 per cent and 15.92 per cent, the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, signed by Dr Shafic Suleman (PhD), Executive Secretary, the PURC observed that the upward adjustments to electricity and water tariffs follow the completion of its 2026–2030 Multi-Year Tariff Review (MYTO).
According to the PURC, the tariff decision follows months of investment hearings, stakeholder consultations, and regional public forums held across the country as part of the regulatory process.
The Commission says the adjustment reflects the investment needs of power utilities, expected generation inputs, and macroeconomic indicators such as inflation, the cedi–US dollar exchange rate, and the cost of natural gas.
The review also covered operational expenses and the regulated asset base of utilities for the next five years. End item
