Turkish FM meets Russian delegation ahead of peace talks in Istanbul

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Thursday met with the Russian delegation for peace talks with Ukraine, led by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky, in Istanbul.

   The meeting took place behind closed doors at around 9 p.m. local time (1800 GMT) at the Dolmabahce Presidential Office.

   Peace talks between Moscow and Kiev are scheduled for Friday, bringing together the Russian delegation, the Ukrainian delegation led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and the U.S. delegation headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

   Fidan is also expected to attend the talks.

   Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday proposed the resumption of direct negotiations — halted three years ago — in Istanbul.  Enditem
