Ghanaian tertiary institution, the University for Development Studies (UDS), made history by becoming the first educational institution in Africa to win the FISU University Football World Cup in Dalian, China, on Sunday.

The Ghanaian side defeated defending champions, Paulista University from southern Brazil, 2-1 to lift the coveted trophy.

The UDS came from a goal down after Paulista’s Gabriel Viera stunned the former 30 seconds into the first half of the game.

With a spirited performance, however, the Ghanaians found the equalizer late into the game in the second half through captain Mohammed Sulemana.

Determined to carry on making history, the university lads from northern Ghana put in extra work, and their efforts paid off when Ezedeen Alhassan scored directly from a corner kick to seal a comeback win for the Africans.

In a related development, the government of Ghana has extended a congratulatory message to the University for Development Studies for winning the 2025 FISU World University Football Championship in China, according to a statement on Sunday.

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams commended the tertiary institution for being the first African university to accomplish the feat.

“On behalf of the government of Ghana and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, I extend my warmest congratulations to the University for Development Studies for making history as the first Ghanaian and African institution to be in the FISU University Football World Cup,” read the statement.
