Undergraduate fees for the University of Ghana (UG) for the 2025/2026 academic year are up by over 25 percent, according to the provisional fee schedule released by the premier university.

At the College of Humanities, fees for fresh Level 100 students have jumped to about GH¢3,110, up by 34 percent from GH¢2,319 previously.

Continuing students are paying around GH¢2,253, up by 27 percent.

At the Ghana School of Law, fresh students are paying approximately GH¢3,226, a 33 percent, a rise from GH¢2,435.

Also, Continuing students: About GH¢2,396, also significantly higher.

Other colleges like Health Sciences, Basic & Applied Sciences, and Education also face increases in the range of 25 – 35 percent.

A major portion of the overall fee increase comes from third-party charges (e.g., hostel development levies, welfare dues, data packages), which have also risen sharply — for example, from GH¢255 to GH¢767 for some freshmen categories.

There has been widespread frustration and concern among students and families, many of whom say the increases were announced without adequate prior notice and could impose significant financial strain.

In late 2025, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) issued a directive stating that public universities should maintain current fee levels for the 2025/2026 academic year unless Parliament approves changes — a constitutional requirement.

This has added a legal dimension to the dispute over the fee hikes, with questions about whether proper procedures were followed before implementation. Enditem
