Uganda on Wednesday named its final Lady Rugby Cranes squad for the 2025 Women’s Rugby Africa Cup, set to be held June 7-15 in Madagascar.
The tournament will take place at Stade Makis Andohatapenaka in Antananarivo, where Uganda will face hosts Madagascar, regional rivals Kenya, and powerhouse South Africa.
“I have named a very experienced team that is a mixture of experience and youthfulness. We have prepared well, and we know what kind of competition we shall face,” said head coach Charles Onen before the team’s departure.
Team captain Angella Nanyonjo acknowledged the challenge ahead but expressed determination.
“We know it will be a very tough competition for us, but we are well prepared to take every match seriously,” Nanyonjo told Xinhua. She added that despite being the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, Uganda would not back down.
The squad will be without national sevens captain Peace Lekuru, along with Beth Asaba and Leona Acen, all sidelined due to injury.
Uganda qualified for the 2025 Women’s Rugby Africa Cup by winning the Women’s Division 1 tournament held in April in Cote d’Ivoire. The Lady Cranes swept the round-robin event with victories over Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, and Tunisia.
