Why $30 million Chinese Government Grant offers a timely boost and facelift for Aflao market redevelopment

The latest milestone in the enduring economic relationship between China and Ghana is the announcement of a $30 million grant from the Chinese government for the construction of a modern market in Aflao, a pivotal trading hub in the Volta Region.

This is indeed a remarkable initiative, especially coming at a time when economic sustainability has become so crucial to the advancement of the country.

This remarkable gesture, signed on July 7, 2025, by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister and MP for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa, reflects the kind of practical cooperation that yields real dividends for communities.

This new market will not only uplift the economic prospects of Aflao’s residents but is expected to foster stronger trade integration with neighboring Togo, linking the economies of Ho and Lomé in a commercially symbiotic way.

Such projects exemplify how China doesn’t just offer rhetoric about partnership but backs it with tangible investments that have lasting impact.

This isn’t just another infrastructure project—it’s a lifeline for thousands of Ghanaian traders, farmers, artisans, and transport operators.

This market will boost cross-border trade, improve living standards, create jobs, and energize economic activity in the area. It’s a tangible demonstration of friendship, not exploitation.

Yet, despite these goodwill gestures, Chinese investors continue to face hostility and Intimidation in the hands of Ghanaians.

It’s worth noting that this market development is a fulfillment of a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama, demonstrating how China has become a reliable partner in executing Ghana’s national development priorities, regardless of political cycles.

In the evolving story of Ghana’s economic growth and development, few international partners have demonstrated such unwavering commitment and impact as the People’s Republic of China.

As Ghana’s single largest trading partner, China’s strategic presence, supported through the robust work of the Chinese business community, the China-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, continues to play an instrumental role in shaping Ghana’s industrial future, commercial vibrancy, and infrastructural modernization.

From bustling roads to transformative energy projects, thriving retail outlets to large-scale manufacturing plants, Chinese enterprises — coordinated and facilitated through the China-Ghana Chamber of Commerce — have become deeply integrated into Ghana’s socioeconomic fabric.

Their investments span agriculture, telecommunications, construction, mining, and most visibly, retail and wholesale commerce.

These efforts have not only accelerated Ghana’s industrialization agenda but have created tens of thousands of jobs for local Ghanaians, fostered skill transfer, and opened up new opportunities for trade and entrepreneurship.

Beyond grants, China’s trade volume with Ghana consistently tops the chart. Chinese imports and exports into Ghana feed an ecosystem of value chains — from small businesses and local artisans to nationwide suppliers and logistic firms.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Chinese activity is a critical artery in Ghana’s economic circulatory system.

Much of this success can be attributed to the leadership and coordination provided by the China-Ghana Chamber of Commerce, which continues to serve as a bridge between Ghanaian and Chinese businesses.

The Chamber has remained a stabilizing force, guiding investment relations, settling disputes amicably, and promoting a culture of mutual respect and understanding between Ghanaian and Chinese stakeholders.

In a global climate where geopolitical tensions often breed suspicion, the Ghana-China relationship stands out as a model of peaceful, productive cooperation rooted in shared prosperity.

While challenges exist — as they do in every partnership — the overarching legacy of China’s contributions to Ghana cannot be overlooked or minimized.

As Ghana marches forward in its quest for industrial transformation, poverty reduction, and regional integration, it does so knowing that it has a trusted partner in China.

Let us, therefore, commend the Chinese Government and the China-Ghana Chamber of Commerce for their unrelenting support and shared vision for a better Ghana.

In the spirit of true partnership, may the next decades be even more fruitful than the last.

God bless our Homeland Ghana!!

Long live China-Ghana cooperation!!

Long live mutual prosperity!!!!!
