Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Thursday announced putting on hold his campaign to be national chairman of the opposition party.
According to him, the decision follows a statement issued by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Wednesday directing prospective aspirants of the party to put their internal campaigning activities on hold until the NPP opens official nominations.
Chairman Wontumi disclosed that he would have begun his campaign today, May 15, 2025, by meeting party executives in the Asokwa Constituency of the Ashanti region, but had to comply with the directive of the
“I had already spoken to party executives and was billed to have met those in the Asokwa Constituency today, May 15, to begin my campaign for the NPP National Chairman, but have to put it on hold because of the directive issued by our General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, yesterday,” said Chairman Wontumi.
“I’ll support the directive by the General Secretary calling on all aspirants to halt internal campaigns until nominations open,” he added.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman appealed to the party executives to forgive him for his inability to meet them as planned and assured them of meeting them when the NPP gives clearance for aspirants to commence official campaign for party positions.
He emphasized he is the person best suited for the national chairmanship position of the party as he is selfless, has supported the party financially over the years, and is one who can lead to recapturing political power for the NPP in 2028.
The three-time Ashanti Regional Chairman assured the grassroots- polling stations, constituency, and regional chairmen within the party will have a national chairman if he is elected.
“Wontumi is the people’s chairman as he is going to work for them, and listen to them,” he added.
He urged party members to remain united and respect the directive by the General Secretary as the leadership of the NPP works to reposition the party in good standing ahead of the 2028 general election.
NPP General Secretary on Wednesday directed all prospective aspirants for various party positions to stop internal campaigning until official nominations were opened.
