Expert groups have been convened to plan for the reconstruction of Gaza and Ukraine, according to World Bank Group President Ajay Banga on Thursday.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Meetings Plenary, he observed that reconstruction is an essential part of their mandate and stressed the need to work towards peace in conflict-stricken areas.

The World Bank Group President emphasized the need to prepare for peace as the world expresses optimism for it.

“The recent event in Syria and Gaza gives us reason to hope that peace is possible wherever conflict exists—DRC, Sudan, Ukraine, Yemen, and beyond. In that pursuit, we’ve convened expert groups to plan for reconstruction in Gaza and Ukraine, drawing on regional specialists from both the public and private sectors,” said Banga.

He announced that the Gaza group is now coordinating with partners active in the region to see to the reconstruction efforts.

The World Bank, apart from rebuilding what has been lost, the Group President emphasized, must also focus on creating the conditions for opportunity and stability.

According to Banga, more than 85% of the world’s population will live in countries we call “developing” today by 2050, and he cautioned that could be a recipe for instability if the right investments are not done to provide jobs to the people.

“With the right investments—focused not on need, but opportunity—we can unlock a powerful engine of global growth. Without purposeful effort, their optimism risks turning into despair—fueling instability, unrest, and mass migration—with implications for every region and every economy,” he added.

The World Bank Group President stressed the need for jobs to be at the center of any development, economic or national security strategy. End item
