The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament has commended the government for continuing the Kumasi Inner Ring Road project initiated by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, according to a statement on Sunday.
The statement signed by Hon. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member, Committee on Roads and Transport, observed that their attention has been drawn to an agreement between the Ghanaian and Japanese governments to continue the Kumasi Inner Ring Improvement Project.
“Our attention has been drawn to a recent publication announcing the signing of a grant agreement with the Government of Japan (through JICA) for the improvement of sections of the Kumasi Inner Ring Road. First and foremost, we commend the current government for continuing this important project. The decision to follow through is commendable and demonstrates the value of sustaining initiatives that bring long-term benefits to our people,” read the statement.
The minority, however, clarified that the Kumasi Inner Ring Improvement Project is not a new initiative of the current administration, as preparatory works and engagement with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) began in March 2024.
According to the Minority, the project has been conceived as part of a broader strategy to fully dualize the Kumasi Inner Ring Road, with the Southern Bypass to also be dualized with the grant support from the Government of Japan and the Western Bypass addressed under the Sunyani Road Phase 2 Project.
It added, “The objectives of the project—to improve road capacity, reduce congestion, and enhance safety—were clearly defined during the previous administration, which laid the groundwork for the agreement being announced by the Finance Minister.”
The Minority expressed optimism the Mahama-led administration will continue to sustain and complete all the critical road infrastructure projects inherited from the NPP government, including the Suame Interchange, Sunyani Road Phase 2, and the Konongo Bypass. End item
