Mexico began the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 win over South Africa in the opening Group A match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City Thursday.
South Africa finished the game with nine players after two red cards, while the hosts also finished the game with 10 men.
The win gives Mexico an early advantage in Group A, which also includes South Korea and the Czech Republic.
The opening game attracted a packed crowd and officially launched the first 48-team FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Mexico will come up against South Korea on June 18 before playing the Czech Republic on June 24. South Africa, on the other hand, is scheduled to play the Czech Republic on June 18 and South Korea on June 24.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which commenced on June 11, is scheduled to end on July 19. Enditem
