A total of 34 casualties were recorded in Wednesday’s stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, this is according to Deputy Defence Minister, Brogya Genfi.
Providing an update on the El-Wak Stadium tragedy, the minister observed that out of the total number, 6 have been confirmed dead, with five in critical condition and currently at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) receiving medical attention.
“There were 34 casualties – including potential recruits and other persons who are not directly related to the exercise.
6 persons have been confirmed dead, 5 are critical and in ICU, and 12 are fairly critical. The rest are stable and under observation,” said the Deputy Defence Minister.
Mr. Genfi announced that, owing to the tragedy, as directed by the President, John Dramani Mahama, the military recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region has been suspended until further notice.
He further disclosed that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has instituted an internal Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the stampede.
The Deputy Minister commended officers and health workers at 37 Military Hospital for their dedicated services during the difficult moment.
He assured all and sundry that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the safety and dignity of all applicants and to prevent the recurrence of this unfortunate incident. Enditem
