Parliament on Thursday approved the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
In a vote taken in the House, 163 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted in favour of his nomination as the next CJ, while 69 voted against.
Debate on the floor of Parliament ahead of the vote was marked by disagreement between the Majority and Minority caucuses. The motion was, however, carried after a headcount confirmed a clear majority in favour of the nominee.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has served at the Supreme Court since 2008 and is one of the longest-serving members of the bench.
He will succeed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was dismissed by President John Mahama after a committee set up to investigate a petition against her found her culpable. Enditem
