Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested three people after intercepting a bus transporting a large cache of ammunition, including 2,600 rounds of AK-47 bullets, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier, police sources have confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the Regional Police Command, the arrests were made on 26 December, 2025 when officers on routine duty stopped a Kia Grandbird bus travelling from Accra towards Walewale, en route to Paga.
Two suspects — Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate — were arrested at the checkpoint after a search of the vehicle uncovered two concealed containers filled with ammunition.
Police say a third suspect, identified as Mohammed Siisu, aged 21, believed to be the intended recipient of the ammunition, was arrested the following day, 27 December, in Walewale when he arrived to receive the consignment.
A further search of the bus led to the recovery of additional items hidden beneath the driver’s seat, including two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the bus and all recovered exhibits have been impounded. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the source and intended use of the ammunition. Enditem
