‘The people of America have spoken’ – Ramaphosa sees ‘new era’ in world relations after US midterms

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the US midterm elections could usher in a new era in international relations, speaking to reporters after voting in Johannesburg during South Africa’s local government elections on Wednesday.

“We have seen that the Democrats have taken control of the Senate and of the House. And the people of America have spoken, and they continue to speak as they close all the elections,” Ramaphosa said.

“And I do think that this is going to introduce a new era in world relations, really,” he added.

The US midterm elections were held on 3 November 2026, halfway through President Donald Trump’s second term.

Voters elected all 435 members of the House of Representatives and roughly one-third of the Senate, with Democrats winning control of both chambers.
