The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) on Tuesday cautioned the leadership of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to caution its members from assaulting journalists ahead of the party’s presidential primary at the end of the month.

Addressing a press conference in the Ghanaian capital, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, president of the Association, emphasized that political contest should not be the basis for some supporters to attack journalists.

“The GJA issues a firm warning to the leadership of the New Patriotic Party to clearly caution and restrain its supporters ahead of the upcoming flagbearership contest. Political competition must never be used as an excuse to harass, intimidate, or attack journalists.”

He urged the leadership of the party to demonstrate responsibility by making it unequivocally clear that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated.

Mr. Dwumfour advised them to carry out their responsibilities in a professional manner ahead of the party’s primaries.

“The GJA urges journalists to remain committed to responsible, accurate, and development-oriented journalism. Journalists must prioritise the public interest, promote national development, and contribute to social cohesion through fair, balanced and factual reporting,” he added.

The GJA reiterated its unflinching determination to enforce strict adherence to professional ethics. Enditem
