At least 16 people are reported dead following a head-on collision between an ambulance and a ford transit bus at Potrikrom in the Ahafo-Ano South East District of the Ashanti Region, according to the Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene on Tuesday.

In a post on his official Facebook page, the minister expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

“I’ve received briefing about the tragic accident that has claimed the lives of 16 innocent souls at Potrikrom in the Ahafo Ano South East district. My deepest condolences go to their families. May their souls rest in peace,” read the post.

According to sources, the crash occurred when an ambulance with registration number GV 527-23 and a ford transit bus with registration number GT 6576-19, reportedly travelling at high speed, approached each other from opposite directions. The ford transit bus is believed to have been travelling from Kumasi to Bechem at the time.

Accounts from the scene suggest that the ambulance, reportedly belonging to St. Mary’s Catholic Hospital in Drobo, was attempting to overtake another vehicle but could not complete the manoeuvre, leading to the collision. Several passengers aboard the bus are feared to have died instantly from the impact.

Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Mankranso reportedly conveyed the victims to mortuaries at Mankranso and Adugyama.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian authorities have commenced investigations into the circumstances leading to the crash. Enditem
