The Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has hosted a ceremony in Freetown, the country’s capital, to see off the 26th batch of the Chinese medical team and welcome the 27th batch.
Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone Zhao Yong praised the 26th Chinese medical team for successfully completing their mission, and reviewed new achievements in China-Sierra Leone health cooperation, including the five new cooperation agreements exchanged between the two sides.
He urged the incoming doctors to work diligently and further strengthen China-Sierra Leone relations through medical cooperation.
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health Austin Demby hailed China’s long-standing support, recalling assistance during the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. He expressed hope that the 27th batch would build on existing achievements during their 18-month mission.
Certificates were presented to the outgoing medical team members in recognition of their service.
Liu Longfei, head of the departing 26th batch, said that he was pleased to complete their mission in Sierra Leone after a year of service.
Liu said the team worked closely with local doctors to provide treatment to patients, including services using Traditional Chinese Medicine. He added that the team has organized more than 50 training courses of various types, including professional training, clinical training and first-aid training.
Li Zheng, leader of the 27th batch, commended the warm reception from the Sierra Leonean people, noting that the new team had studied reports from their predecessors.
“We have seen both the successes and the challenges, and we are ready to work with our local counterparts to create a healthier society in Sierra Leone,” Li said. Enditem
