Ministerial Reshuffle: Mahama reassigns Gilbert Adjei as Defence Minister, Zanetor for Environment

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, as Minister for Defence as part of a ministerial reshuffle, according to the presidency on Friday.

A statement from the Presidency signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications said the President had reassigned Mr Adjei to the Defence Ministry and submitted the changes to Parliament through the Speaker in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The reshuffle, the first under the Mahama government, also saw Ahmed Ibrahim, MP, reassigned from the Ministry of Local  Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

President Mahama further nominated Korley-Klottey Member of Parliament and daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation-designate and Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs-designate.

The nominations are subject to approval by Parliament.

The defence and environment ministries porfolios became vacant after the two ministers; Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed died in a plane crash alongside other six in the August 5, 2025 helicopter crash at Sikaman, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah were appointed by the president as caretaker for the defence and environment ministries respectively after the substantive ministers perished in the August 6 crash. Enditem
