The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has hinted that transport fares in Ghana may increase soon, according to its Industrial Relations Officer Abass Imoro on Friday.
According to him, rising operational costs facing commercial drivers is what has triggered the decision.
Mr. Imoro explained that transport operators are under serious financial pressure due to increases in fuel prices and other operating costs.
He noted that aside from fuel, spare parts, tyres, lubricants, insurance and vehicle maintenance costs have also gone up, making it difficult for drivers to maintain current fares.
According to him, fare adjustments are normally based on several factors, including fuel price changes, exchange rate movements, cost of spare parts, and vehicle maintenance.
He added that if the current trend continues, transport operators may be forced to review fares upward to remain in business.
The GPRTU however insists that any fare review would follow consultations with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Transport and other transport unions, as required under the national transport fare adjustment arrangement.
Mr. Imoro stressed that fare changes are not arbitrary and are usually determined after assessing the overall cost of operating commercial transport services.
If approved, commuters across the country could soon pay higher fares for trotros, taxis and other commercial vehicles. Enditem
