Ghana govt to engage Burkina Faso over tomato ban

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The government of Ghana has announced plans to engage authorities in Burkina Faso following the recent ban on the export of fresh tomatoes to Ghana.

The ban, which took effect from March 16, 2026, suspends tomato exports from Burkina Faso “until further notice.”

Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry says it will open diplomatic and technical discussions with Burkinabè authorities to resolve the issue.

The goal is to find a mutually beneficial solution and preserve long-standing trade relations between the two countries.

The Burkinabè government says the move is to prioritise domestic supply and support its local tomato processing industry.

Export permits have been halted, and any violations could face sanctions.

Ghana relies significantly on tomato imports from Burkina Faso, especially during shortages.

The restriction is expected to affect supply and potentially push prices up in local markets.

Meanwhile, tomato traders have been urged to remain calm as negotiations continue. Enditem
