The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has urged football fans and the general public to ensure the tragedy that befell Ghana football some 25 years ago does not recur.
In a statement to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the national disaster that claimed the lives of over 100 fans, the Football Association reminded all stakeholders of football the need for tolerance and safety.
The FA said the grief, memories of those who lost their lives on that fateful day remain forever etched in the hearts of the nation.
“Twenty-five years ago, 126 passionate football souls perished at the Accra Sports Stadium. May we never witness such a tragedy again. And may all stakeholders in Ghana football constantly remind ourselves of the need to uphold the spirit of discipline, safety, unity, and fair play in all our activities.
The FA expressed its deep sympathies to the families and friends who lost relatives and loved ones on the day.
On May 9, 2001, Ghana experienced its worst football tragedy where 126 fans died in a stampede during a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
The incident, which remains the dark moment in Ghana football, was triggered by a tear gas fired by the police into a section of the fans who were unhappy over a decision by the referee. Enditem
