Michael Arhin, a player with the Coldstore Basketball Club in Ghana, collapsed on the field of play on Wednesday and died moments later, the Greater Accra Basketball Association (GABBA) confirmed Thursday.
Arhin was reported to have encountered a medical condition following which emergency attention was immediately administered on the field of play before he was transferred to a medical facility for medical care but passed away moments later.
“The Greater Accra Basketball Association regrets to announce the passing of Michael Arhin of Coldstore Basketball Club following an unfortunate medical incident during an Accra basketball league fixture on Wednesday, May 20, 2026,” the association confirmed.
Subsequently, the basketball league has been suspended, and a committee set up to unravel the issues surrounding the death of Arhin.
“In response to the incident, GABBA has suspended all league fixtures for the week and constituted a committee of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the matter and make recommendations to management,” added. the statement.
The association assured it remains committed to the safety, welfare, and well-being of all players, officials, and stakeholders within the basketball community. It extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, teammates, friends, and the basketball fraternity in the country. Enditem
