A heavy police and security presence descended on downtown Washington DC on Saturday evening after a suspected gunman opened fire near the White House and was fatally shot by Secret Service officers.
Footage shows police vehicles and National Guard personnel cordoning off and securing the area near the White House, with officers stationed at multiple points around the scene.
According to a statement from the United States Secret Service, the incident happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue shortly after 6 pm local time, when the individual pulled a weapon from a bag and began firing before Secret Service officers returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One bystander was also hit during the shooting and taken for medical treatment.
US President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time, though the Secret Service stated that no protectees or operations were affected.
