Tanzanian President Hassan awarded honorary doctorate at Russia’s RUDN University

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan received her honorary doctorate at Russia’s Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University – known as RUDN University – in Moscow on Thursday.

Footage shows the African leader putting on an academic dress during the ceremony at the institution, named after the late DRC leader.

“I render gratitude to this moment of fellowship, reflection and shared commitment to knowledge. I further extend my sincere appreciation to the University Council, the Senate, the Rector, the academic community and the students of RUDN University for this distinguished honour. Thank you very much,” Hassan said.

“It is also a recognition of the journey of friendship between Tanzania and Russia and of the enduring belief that education remains one of the most powerful bridges between our nations,” she continued.

She also praised the co-operation between the university and her country, noting that over 5,000 Tanzanians have received higher education at RUDN over the years.

“For Tanzania, RUDN University is not a distant institution. It is part of our shared history of co-operation which goes beyond the confines of education and deeply grounded by the fraternal relations between Tanzania and Russia. It is a relationship shaped by solidarity, mutual respect and co-operation in areas that matter the lives of our peoples,” Hassan added.

RUDN rector Oleg Yastrebov revealed that two more co-operation agreements had been signed between his university and the University of Tanzania.

“Undoubtedly, Tanzania holds a special place in this co-operation. Citizens of your country have been studying at our university since its foundation,” he added. “We are proud that over 1,100 citizens who received their education at RUDN are now working for the benefit of Tanzania.”

Hassan arrived in Moscow on Tuesday on her first visit to the country – and the first by a leader of Tanzania in five decades. On Wednesday, she held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the sides discussed bilateral co-operation and exchanged views on pressing issues on the international and regional agenda.
