It’s kicking off! – Mexico City comes alive with football fever just hours before World Cup… as locals FUME at disruption

Mexico City came alive with football fever ahead of the 2026 World Cup – but it seemed not everyone was happy about the upcoming sporting extravaganza.

Video from Tuesday show dance groups and fans cheering for the Mexican team. Supporters gathered at the iconic Angel of Independence, on Paseo de la Reforma, one of the busiest avenues in the country.

“We are going to make history as a country. We have many problems right now… but despite this, we don’t lose our attitude!” said one fan. “Mexico is beautiful… [fans should] enjoy it from the first minute until the day they leave, that they enjoy it because there is much to see here in Mexico. And eat a lot of chili!”

However, others appeared to be angry at the disruption: “It’s a bit difficult the fact that it’s blocking the way… it takes more time to be able to get to work on time…we arrive a bit later due to all the restrictions we are having in terms of transportation because of this closure.”

Near Azteca Stadium, located in the Santa Ursula Coapa neighbourhood, a group of fans cheered for the Colombian team.

“We’ve been here for three days, the first time I come to Mexico, they welcomed us in a spectacular way. We’ve been very well. At the airport, super well. Nothing happens, yes. So we are here with this excitement, as I say, to experience this World Cup,” he noted.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026, in Mexico, the United States and Canada. The Mexican venues will be the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City; the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara; and the BBVA Stadium in Monterrey.
