Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesperson Hossein Mohebi called the US ‘the enemy’ during a televised interview on Sunday, warning that Tehran would respond to any further hostilities.
“This enemy (the US) breaks its covenants; it is both deceitful and untrustworthy, and may commit violations at any stage of negotiations. However, what is important is that we have responded and will continue to respond to any action the enemy takes in this regard,” Mohebi proclaimed.
He added Iran would respond “far more forcefully than before” if tensions escalate again.
“This is the nature of our enemy; it is oath-breaking, untrustworthy, and may engage in violations at any moment. We view these actions as typical of this enemy because we recognise its true essence. But as I stated, what is very important is that we have always responded to the enemy, and we will continue to do so,” the IRGC spokesperson concluded.
His remarks followed a new round of US strikes on targets inside Iran, the second such operation in two days.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had struck “multiple targets in Iran, June 27, at the Commander in Chief’s direction,” describing the operation as a response to ‘Iranian aggression’ against commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM also announced the strikes hit “military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities.”
The IRGC responded its naval and air forces then carried out a retaliatory operation against what it called the ‘latest US aggression.’
In a statement, the IRGC said a joint operation struck eight military sites at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the US Fifth Fleet headquarters at Mina Salman in Bahrain between 2:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.
“The aggressive enemy, a persistent treaty and covenant breaker, attacked five Iranian coastal sites at dawn today under the pretext of responding to the Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces arrangements against the violating ship,” the IRGC statement read.
The IRGC said that, under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, “the arrangements for regulating navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are the responsibility of the Islamic Republic.”
It added that “any violating ship will be dealt more decisively than before from now on,” and warned that “any potential aggression by the enemy, no matter the excuse, even if the attacks are directed against unimportant targets as happened last night and today, will be met with a crushing response.”
Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, setting out a ceasefire framework. A first round of follow-up talks later took place in Switzerland as both sides worked towards a final agreement.
