Hundreds mark 1,000 days of Gaza war in silent march in Paris

Hundreds of people joined a silent march in Paris on Thursday, marking ‘1,000 days of genocide in Gaza’ and paying tribute to victims of the war.

Footage shows protesters dressed in black moving through the French capital, holding portraits of victims and dolls symbolising children killed in Gaza. Others waved Palestinian, Lebanese and Iranian flags, while placards carried messages including ‘Not just numbers’ and ‘Nurse killed by Israel’.

“This has to stop. Conditions in the Gaza Strip today are unbearable. The people of Gaza have had enough. They face hardships all day long, day after day, under the threat of bombs that continue to fall every day,” Europalestine NGO spokesperson Sebastien said.

Protesters voiced frustration over the failure of governments and international organisations to act, saying the ‘deafening silence’ had pushed them onto the streets.

“It’s horrible. It’s been 1,000 days – can you imagine? And every aspect of life in Gaza, down to the most basic necessities, has been destroyed. That’s what sickens me, what revolts me,” Hazedine shared.

“Is there any hope for peace? I have serious doubts. Today, the genocide is supported by the arms lobby and financial powers, so why would they stop the war?” another protester questioned.

July 2 marked 1,000 days since the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 people. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has since killed more than 73,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.

The allegation of genocide remains before the International Court of Justice in a case brought by South Africa. The court has issued provisional measures in the case but has not delivered a final ruling on whether genocide has been committed.

A UN-mandated commission of inquiry has separately concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel rejects.

The protest was reportedly called by the EuroPalestine organisation.
