Thousands of Argentina fans gathered in Miami on Thursday for a traditional Banderazo, the Albiceleste’s traditional high-energy fan rally, turning the city blue and white ahead of the World Cup knockout clash with surprise package Cape Verde.
Footage shows supporters in Argentina shirts preparing a barbecue at the gathering, with flags flying throughout the crowd. One banner depicts Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, alongside the Spanish inscription ‘Proudly Argentine’.
“Argentinians are passionate people. We live football, we live the build-up, and above all, we love what we do. Today, with this barbecue, we’re trying to recreate that spirit and bring it to everyone here supporting the national team in Miami,” explained fan Salvador Mazzochi.
Supporters travelled from across Argentina to back the defending champions and their legendary captain Lionel Messi in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
“I came specifically to watch the World Cup. We’ve been planning this for almost a year, and well, we hope to become champions – to repeat the feat, as they say, and defend the Cup. I believe – and have faith – that we’ll pull it off,” said fellow supporter Gunther Fritz.
“I’m happy to be here supporting Argentina along with the huge crowd of Argentine fans – we traveled from Argentina fifteen days ago to be part of this whole movement, to see Argentina go all the way and win that star,” fellow fan Milena Lerda added, referring to the star on the jersey that denotes a World Cup trophy. “We’re definitely going for that fourth star with him (Messi).”
Argentina play Cape Verde at Miami Stadium in the Round of 32, the first knockout stage, on July 3, with the winner progressing to the last 16.
