At least 12 persons have been killed in a head-on-collision on the Accra-Kumasi highway involving three vehicles, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed Thursday.

According to Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, the accident which occurred at Konongo in the Ashanti region (province), involved a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck transporting tomatoes, and an empty fuel tanker.

Preliminary findings as provided by the GNFS indicate that the DAF cargo truck, which was travelling from Kumasi towards Accra attempted to overtake another vehicle on a slope and in the process the driver lost control of the truck leading to a head-on-collision with the Tata bus from Accra to northern Ghana while the empty fuel tanker subsequently ran into the accident scene.

“The accident resulted in 12 fatalities, comprising nine males and three females. In all, 44 persons got injured out of which 30 sustained critical injuries,” said Nartey.

Meanwhile, the GNFS, together with other emergency response agencies carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and ensured the scene was secured to facilitate the safe evacuation of casualties and restoration of free flow of traffic. Enditem
