DRC Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka visited the Ebola front line in the eastern town of Mongbwalu on Friday, as exhausted medical teams battle the country’s latest outbreak.
Footage shows Suminwa arriving at Mongbwalu General Hospital under armed guard, meeting health workers and facing questions from staff.
“Ensuring the safety of healthcare workers is paramount. This includes providing equipment not only for their safety but also, and more importantly, ensuring the best possible care for patients and their safety, including equipment such as ambulances,” Suminwa told local health officials.
“This work has begun and will continue to ensure everything is in place and that no gaps are left. Furthermore, a government decision has been made to provide free healthcare in affected areas; now, this must be implemented on the ground,” she added.
The outbreak is getting worse. Government figures showed 3,075 confirmed cases and 1,354 deaths by July 25, with hundreds of new infections recorded in just days. Health officials say violence, shortages, public mistrust and strikes over unpaid wages are crippling efforts to contain the virus.
Mongbwalu, in Ituri province, is among the areas worst hit, with armed-group violence making the fight against Ebola even harder.
