Twenty-five people were killed and 44 others injured on Friday after a passenger bus veered off the road, overturned and plunged down a slope in the Berahmoun El Karma area of Algeria’s Boumerdes Province.
Footage shows the overturned bus at the crash site, with victims’ belongings scattered nearby as rescue teams and ambulances gather around the wreckage.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he received news of the deadly crash with ‘great sorrow and deep sadness’, blaming what he called the ‘criminals and terrorists of the roads’.
“Justice will strike with an iron fist, without leniency, after the investigations reveal the circumstances of the accident,” he added.
Tebboune also announced three days of national mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast.
The president tasked Prime Minister Seifi Ghrieb with assessing the impact of the crash on the ground and monitoring the condition of those being treated in hospital.
Ghrieb also appealed to passenger bus drivers to “show the highest degree of responsibility and adhere to safety and prevention rules in order to preserve citizens’ lives”.
