Extremely heavy rain triggered flash floods in Mabian Yi Autonomous County in Leshan, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, early Saturday, inundating streets and damaging homes, businesses and vehicles.
Footage shows residents picking up the pieces in Leshan, as streets were left covered with a thick layer of red mud after the floods subsided. Shop owners could be seen sweeping remaining water and debris out of their storefronts, while a digger cleared roads.
Ren Wenfeng, Communist Party committee secretary of Minjian Town, said around 2,000 personnel and more than 30 vehicles and pieces of machinery had been mobilised for the emergency response.
“We expect to complete the road clearance and traffic restoration by tomorrow afternoon,” Ren said, adding that disinfection work would follow across the affected areas.
By 07:00, 1,455 residents from 446 households had been evacuated and relocated across the county after floodwaters left some people stranded.
The local weather service issued an orange heavy-rain alert at 01:33, before upgrading it to the highest-level red alert at 02:44 as the downpour intensified.
Several streets were submerged, with vehicles, shops and buildings flooded or damaged. Large quantities of mud and debris were also washed onto roads.
Emergency teams continued rescuing stranded residents while crews worked to restore transport links and clear the flood-hit streets.
