Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday charged the Minority Caucus to hold the John Mahama-led administration accountable for their stewardship.
Bawumia made the call when the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, paid a visit to him in his private residence in the national capital, Accra, to discuss party matters and the agenda before the Minority as Parliament reconvenes for an emergency sitting called by the Speaker.
He urged Afenyo-Markin to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, or GH₵22 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report.
He called on the Minority to do everything within the rules of the House to ensure the Mahama government is held fully accountable to the people of Ghana for this loss. He commended the Minority for its efforts so far.
The former Vice President expressed full confidence in the leadership of Afenyo-Markin and cautioned the Minority Leader against being distracted by attempts to divert public attention from the loss incurred by the Central Bank under the auspices of the GoldBod.
Afenyo-Markin assured Dr. Bawumia that the purported $1.7 billion is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of their ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people.
He stressed that the colossal loss, under the watch of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana, is firmly on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes a week, starting on Monday for urgent parliamentary business.
He said, “We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve.”
