Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on Monday sued the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Sammy Gyamfi over allegations describing him as an “extortionist.”
Afenyo-Markin announced the legal action on Monday when Parliament reconvened. According to the Minority Leader, Gyamfi’s statements are false and defamatory and were made amid their ongoing dispute over GoldBod’s operations and reported losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Two suits have reportedly been filed including Suit No. GT/1029/2026 — Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court and Suit No. GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026 — Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court.
The controversy intensified after Gyamfi accused Afenyo-Markin of extortion in response to the Minority Leader’s criticism of GoldBod and his demands for accountability over a reported US$1.7 billion loss under the DGPP in 2025. Gyamfi had subsequently dared Afenyo-Markin to sue, saying he was prepared to defend the allegation in court.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said he had initiated legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi and media organisations that published or broadcast the statements in question.
“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter based on the evidence and applicable law.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added
Meanwhile, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has said it will assess the extortion allegations made against Afenyo-Markin to determine whether they fall within its mandate and whether further investigation is warranted. Enditem
