Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi put the Global South at the centre of his closing-day address to the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Sunday, calling for greater representation and reform of global institutions.
Addressing leaders and delegates, Modi said confidence in the expanded bloc was growing across developing countries.
“I can say from my personal experience that the trust of Global South countries in BRICS has grown, because their voice is heard in BRICS. Their experience is respected, and solutions are created not just for them, but together with them,” he noted.
Modi said solutions developed within BRICS should not remain confined to its members, but be adapted to the needs of the Global South. He also urged greater cooperation to tackle rising global tensions, pandemics, climate disasters and supply chain disruption among other challenges.
“The strength of BRICS lies in our diversity and cooperation. May we be rooted in different realities, together through cooperation for humanity. May our diversity remain our identity, may our cooperation become our inspiration, and may our progress serve all of humanity,” the prime minister underlined.
India is hosting the two-day summit on September 12 and 13 under its 2026 BRICS chairship, bringing together leaders from the bloc’s 11 members alongside partner and invited countries.
On Saturday, BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026, backing reforms to global institutions and stronger cooperation on sustainable development and inclusive growth.
The summit’s final day focuses on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability, with India pushing for closer Global South cooperation and a greater voice for developing economies.
