Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that Tehran was waiting for a formal US response to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and advancing negotiations between the two countries.
“The proposal we submitted was discussed in interviews and meetings, explained, and conveyed to the American side through intermediaries. We saw the first reaction from the President of the United States, but nothing has yet been conveyed to us by the mediators,” Araghchi said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“Unfortunately, the President of the United States also says many contradictory things. We are waiting for definitive views to be conveyed to us by the mediators, and we will decide based on them,” he continued.
Araghchi said Tehran’s main focus was setting out its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and making progress in negotiations.
Iran’s proposal laid out a roadmap to reopen the Strait to normal maritime traffic within seven days. It included conditions calling for the release of frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil sales and an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, followed by negotiations towards a final agreement.
The proposal was put forward during a series of diplomatic contacts in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, with Qatar acting as an intermediary.
Trump has since rejected the seven-day proposal, according to US media reports.
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly opened in New York on September 8. The general debate began on September 22, continued through September 26 and concludes on September 28 under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”.
