The Black Stars of Ghana were stunned by the Scorpions of The Gambia by 4-2 in their second Group C match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Having lost their first qualifier against Cote d’Ivoire last week Thursday, the Ghanaians were eager to pick up all three points at stake, hence establishing their dominance from the commencement of the game.
Ghana was awarded a penalty after Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku was fouled in the Gambian half. Ernest Nuamah expertly scored to give Ghana the opening goal in the 27th minute.
Six minutes later, Felix Afena-Gyan scored the second goal for the Black Stars to give Ghana a two-goal lead. The Scorpions, however, reorganized themselves and scored two goals in the 37th and 42nd minutes through Mohammed Badamasi and captain Omar Colley to end the first half 2-2.
Back from recess, the Black Stars continued their dominant possession; however, the away team kept their composure and scored their third goal in the 68th minute through Ebrima Colley.
Colley added his second on the night and fourth for the visitors, ending the match at 4-2 in favor of The Gambia.
With the result, The Gambia occupies the top spot on the Group C league log, with Cote d’Ivoire and Somalia occupying second and third, respectively, with a game to spare. Ghana, however, lies at the bottom of the league log.
Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and has recorded no point after two matches in the ongoing qualifiers. Enditem
