Comoros backs Pakistan-China diplomatic efforts for peaceful resolution to Middle East conflict – president Assoumani

Comoros President Azali Assoumani voiced support for diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan and China to resolve the Middle East conflict peacefully at the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on Thursday.

“The Union of the Comoros reiterates here its call for the protection of civilian populations in Gaza, for an end to the suffering inflicted on the Palestinian people, and reaffirms its support for the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, in peace,” Assoumani said.

He added that Comoros supported the diplomatic efforts of Pakistan and China “in favour of a peaceful solution to the conflict ravaging the Middle East and impacting the whole world”.

The president also called for stronger African integration, stressing that respect for national sovereignty was essential to building a better future for the continent. He highlighted the need to diversify economies, strengthen food and energy security, develop infrastructure and create jobs for Africa’s young population.

“The greatest wealth of our continent remains without any doubt: it’s our youth,” Assoumani said, urging investment in education, vocational training, healthcare and medical research.

He also expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would lead to a lasting peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, and called for reforms of the United Nations and international financial institutions to give Africa a greater role in global decision-making, including permanent representation on the UN Security Council.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of maritime law and freedom of navigation, adding that developments in the Gulf should not distract the international community from the situation in Palestine.

“Russia supports it and considers that the resolution of the Palestinian issue can be achieved only by implementing the principle of the creation of two states, including the establishment of a Palestinian state,” Putin said.

The Third Russia-Africa Summit on October 28-29 brings together African leaders and Russian officials to discuss political and economic co-operation, security, science and technology, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties.
