Equatorial Guinea sees opportunity for new momentum in partnership with Russia – President Obiang

Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo said it was the right time to seize ‘new momentum’ in the partnership with Russia, speaking at the Third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow on Thursday.

“Equatorial Guinea considers that this is the time to give new momentum to the partnership. For this, it will be necessary to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, define priority projects and ensure the resources, responsibilities and implementation timelines,” he stated.

The president also highlighted the importance of expanding ties across various sectors.

“We must strengthen co-operation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, technology, human resource training and the financing of productive projects. This co-operation is also a hope for our young population, which needs opportunities for training, employment and participation in the economic development of our countries”, he said.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of ensuring Africa’s representation in international organisations.

“Africa’s value and its representation in universal international organisations must be ensured. We must proceed precisely, on the basis of a broad consensus, so as not to destroy at least what we have, because there is no other tool as universal in the hands of the international community as the UN Security Council, as the United Nations Organisation”, he said.

The Third Russia-Africa Summit on October 28-29 brings together African leaders and Russian officials to discuss political and economic co-operation, security, science and technology, as well as cultural and humanitarian ties.
