Former Minister of State at the Presidency, Hon. Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu will begin his nationwide campaign for the national chairmanship position of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) from the Volta Region on November 2, according to a statement from his campaign team on Friday.
The statement, signed by Convener of the Campaign Team, Hon. Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, said the decision to commence the campaign from the Volta Region stems from the historic loyalty and sacrifices of the region’s contributions to the electoral successes of the ruling party.
“The Campaign Team of Hon. Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, aspiring National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, announces the commencement of his nationwide campaign tour in the Volta Region on Monday, 2nd November, 2026,” read the statement.
While in the region, Hon. Opong-Fosu will engage stakeholders of the NDC, including regional and constituency executives, delegates, branch executives, party elders, cadres, former and current Members of Parliament (MPs), former and current appointees, and others.
During the engagement, Hon. Opong-Fosu, who is also a former MP for the Amenfi East Constituency, will listen and share his vision of consolidating the political gains of the party and protecting the legacy of President John Dramani Mahama as well as positioning the party to retain power in subsequent general elections.
The Volta Regional tour: the team expects to use the interactions to build consensus around a stronger, more united, and more inclusive party guided by his 3Vs—votes, voice, and viability—ensuring that grassroots members are recognized, heard, and empowered economically.
According to the Campaign Team, Hon. Opong-Fosu, who has served Ghana in various positions, represents the leadership and experience the NDC needs at this critical juncture as he understands the party’s foundations, grassroots structures, and the demands of political leadership.
The team added that the proven experience of the current Board Chair of the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA), his institutional knowledge, and his commitment to the unity of the ruling party put him ahead of others to lead the NDC to consolidate its electoral gains and safeguard its political future, as well as retain power in the 2028 general election and beyond.
Hon. Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu is a distinguished Ghanaian statesman, governance expert, and international development advocate whose public service spans more than four decades.
He has served in various positions in Ghana, beginning with the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) from 1982 till the current Fourth Republic dispensation.
The governing NDC opened nominations for its national executive elections on October 20, 2026, and is scheduled to hold its election on December 19 this year. Enditem
