A high-level committee of experts has submitted five reports to President John Dramani Mahama ahead of his Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027, Foreign Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Ablakwa announced that the reports contain the strategy document, priority pillars and work programme for the president to adopt upon assumption of office.

He emphasised that President Mahama’s tenure as the next AU chairman is expected to be transformative and impactful due to the bold vision the Ghanaian leader has for Africa.

“President Mahama’s tenure is expected to be transformative and impactful due to the rigors preparatory work underway and his bold vision for our continent,” posted the Ghanaian FM.

President Mahama will assume chairmanship of the AU from January next year, and as part of his preparatory work ahead of his new role, he will set up a high-level committee of experts to put together a strategy document, priority pillars, and work programme.

The committee, led by Ablakwa, which has concluded its mandate, submitted five reports to the Ghanaian president on Friday.

The FM, on behalf of the committee, conveyed their best wishes to Mahama as he prepares to take over from Burundi’s Evariste Ndayishimiye as the ceremonial head of the AU assembly.

Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, was elected chairman of the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1965, while Joseph Arthur Ankrah, the leader of the military junta that toppled Nkrumah’s government, became chairperson of the organisation the following year.

John Agyekum Kufuor became the fifth chairperson of the organisation after it had transitioned to the AU in 2007 for a year.

John Mahama was endorsed during the 68th ordinary session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja in December 2025 as the chairperson of the AU in January 2027. Enditem
