Former South African President Jacob Zuma cast his ballot in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday as his uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party contested its first local government elections.
Footage shows Zuma voting before singing and dancing alongside supporters, who gathered around him chanting and filming the moment.
“We don’t know what the results will be, but we are saying here, in our land, we will take it over and rule. We will then change a lot of things that are not going well,” Zuma said.
“We can’t be a country like this, where there are people who claim to represent the people, but the people are poor. We won’t allow that,” he added.
MK party officials said they wanted to replace the ANC and bring change.
“We want to change what has not been done, what was supposed to be done by the ANC. So now we are coming in as the MK Party to take over, to change things, to bring the land back to the people, and to take ownership of our country,” said MKP Regional Coordinator Dumisani Khanyile.
Founded in 2023, the MK party emerged as a major political force in South Africa’s 2024 general election, winning 58 seats in the National Assembly.
The party also secured around 45% of the vote in KwaZulu-Natal, becoming the largest party in the provincial legislature.
