Flames engulfed the entrance of a secondary school in Lyon on Friday after rubbish bins and electric scooters were set alight outside the building, as student protests continued across France.
Footage shows people gathering outside Édouard-Herriot High School as flames spread across the entrance and thick black smoke billows into the sky.
The fire damaged the school’s entrance and facade, forcing students to evacuate. No injuries were reported.
It remains unclear who started the blaze. The incident occurred during a wave of student demonstrations marked by school blockades and clashes with police.
The incident followed nationwide protests on Thursday over wages, rising living costs and public services, with students also demanding better school facilities, more teachers and increased education funding.
The student protest movement began at a secondary school in Créteil, southeast of Paris, in September over teacher shortages and has since spread to cities across France, with demonstrations, school blockades and clashes with police.
