Minority urges govt to fix ‘dumsor’ immediately

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament on Monday urged the John Dramani Mahama-led administration to the ongoing erratic power crisis locally known as ‘dumsor.’

According to the group, the current power crisis across the country is crippling the economy and exposing many Ghanaians to avoidable hardship.

Addressing a press conference, the Minority Caucus described the current power outages as “a national emergency” and condemned what they called the government’s persistent “lack of honesty, poor planning, and administrative failure” in the energy sector.

The press conference titled, “Stop the Talking, Fix the Lights – Before the 24-Hour Economy Becomes a 24-Hour Blackout,” Hon. George Kwame Aboagye, Ranking Member on the Energy Committee and Member of Parliament for the Asene-Akroso-Manso Constituency urged the government to get to work and solve the problem.

“The time for excuses is over, the government must come clean on the true state of Ghana’s energy sector and publish a load-shedding timetable if it cannot resolve the crisis immediately, said Hon. Aboagye.

The Minority highlighted the toll the erratic power supply is having on households, businesses, and public institutions.

They warned the government that its much-touted 24-hour economy policy risks becoming meaningless if the country could not guarantee consistent power supply.

The MPs also questioned the silence of key institutions including the Energy Ministry and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), urging Parliament to play a stronger oversight role in holding these bodies accountable.

The Minority Caucus further called on President John Dramani Mahama and Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor to take full responsibility for the deteriorating situation and present a clear road map to end the blackouts.

There’s been growing public outcry about the precarious erratic power supply in the country with many calling on the government to take the bull by the horn to address the problem to promote businesses. Enditem
