Korvenu residents plead for potable water amid health risks

By Christian Ahodie

In the heart of the Akatsi South Municipality lies Korvenu, a farming community of over 6,000 residents grappling with a decades-long water crisis. Despite their proximity to a Ghana Water Company facility just 2.5 kilometres away, residents have no access to clean, potable water.

Residents rely on a single dugout out as their only water source  they share with cattle. This poses significant health risks and has led to recurring outbreaks of waterborne diseases including cholera, diarrhoea, and skin infections.

“Water is life,” a resident said, “but here in Korvenu, our lives are in danger because of the water we drink.”

During a recent visit to Korvenu, by our  reporter witnessed residents fetching murky brown water from the dugout. The emotional toll was visible.

Rebecca Kumamu, a resident, lamented, “We wake up every day not knowing whether the water we drink will make us sick.”

Vicancia Vitasi Ama echoed the same sentiments, describing the suffering women endure, especially during the dry season.

Local men, including Eric Azigi Metsiame and Robert Metsiame, appealed passionately to the government for urgent intervention.

The family head, Jacob Kudese Azamela, expressed deep frustration over the years of neglect.

“We are not asking for much. All we want is safe, clean water to drink,” he said.

He called on President John Dramani Mahama and the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, who also serves as the MP for Akatsi South, to take immediate steps to address the crisis.

The irony remains bitter: a functioning Ghana Water Company facility is a short distance away, yet Korvenu continues to suffer.

The plight of Korvenu is a stark reminder that in the 21st century, no community should be forced to share water sources with animals or endure preventable diseases due to lack of basic infrastructure. Enditem
