Transport operators in the country on Wednesday released detailed fares of the 15 percent reduction, according to a statement released here.

The statement signed by Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Road Coordinating Council announced the new fares cover shared taxis, intra city or ‘trotro,’ intercity or long distance haulage.

“In line with the administrative arrangement on public transport fares, the Road Transport Operators have reduced public transport fares by 15 percent to accommodate for the reduction in the price of petroleum products observed over the period,” read the statement.

The statement requested all commercial transport operators to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals and further urged operators, commuters, and members of the general public to cooperate to ensure the successful implementation of the new fares.

Transport fares will be reduced starting Saturday, May 24, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced over the weekend after a meeting with the Transport Minister.

The reduction is due to the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollars which has led to slump in the prices of petroleum products.
