At least 18 members of Niger’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS) stationed in Tessa, Dosso region in southwestern Niger, were killed Friday in a terrorist attack by armed assailants, local media reported Sunday.
“Last Friday, armed individuals arriving on several motorcycles targeted the FDS position manned by gendarmerie personnel in the locality, which also hosts the commune’s main weekly market,” Nigerien news website ActuNiger reported.
According to the same source, the attackers directly targeted the camp housing the FDS personnel.
The Nigerien authorities have not yet released an official death toll from the attack.
The attack is one of the deadliest recorded in this area bordering Nigeria and Benin, where several armed terrorist groups operating in the Sahel region are active. Enditem
