Senegalese, Mauritanian presidents visit offshore gas project platform

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on Thursday visited the platform of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) offshore gas project, located 10 km off the coasts of both countries, the Senegalese presidency announced.

This joint visit marks “a major step in energy cooperation” between Mauritania and Senegal, according to a joint statement.

It also celebrates “two historic milestones recently achieved — the start of gas production in January 2025 and the first export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in April 2025, thereby officially integrating both nations into the exclusive group of LNG-exporting countries,” the statement said.

The GTA project, developed by BP and its partners Kosmos Energy, PETROSEN, and SMH, is described as “one of the most ambitious liquefied natural gas projects in Africa, featuring some of the continent’s deepest underwater infrastructure.”

“The initial phase of the GTA project will produce around 2.4 million tonnes of LNG per year, aimed at supplying the international market while meeting the growing energy needs of both countries,” the statement noted.

Recognized as a “national strategic project” by both governments, the GTA also aims to “contribute to the development of local content, particularly through the training of national technicians for integration into the offshore oil and gas industry,” it added.  Enditem
